DUBLIN, Ireland - Two men have been charged and appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on Monday following Friday's major Garda operation that uncovered approximately €3 million worth of heroin in Coolock.
The arrests came as part of an ongoing investigation into transnational and Dublin-based organised crime gangs. Officers from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) intercepted a vehicle in the Coolock area on Friday, where they discovered around 21 kilograms of heroin. The drugs have since been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene, while a second man, in his 40s, was detained following further inquiries. Both were initially held at a Garda station in north Dublin before being formally charged.
Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis, head of Organised and Serious Crime, praised the operation,
"The sale and supply of heroin has an especially harmful impact, destroying lives and devastating communities across Ireland. Disrupting this trade remains a top priority, and we will continue to target criminal networks operating at both local and international levels," she said Monday.
The seizure is one of the largest heroin busts in Ireland this year and highlights the Gardaí's intensified efforts against organised drug trafficking.
The two accused men are expected to face further court proceedings in the coming weeks, following Monday's court appearance.
