BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China finishes runner-up in AFC U17 Asian Cup
China finished runner-up in the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Japan in the final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on May 22.
China enjoyed an impressive run in the tournament, reaching the final after overcoming Saudi Arabia 3-1 in the quarterfinals and defeating Australia 2-0 in the semifinals.
With the victory, Japan claimed its fifth AFC U17 Asian Cup title, extending its record as the most successful team in the continental tournament's history.
2. China claims women's doubles title at Badminton Thailand Open
Chinese pair Bao Lijing and Cao Zihan sealed the women's doubles title at the 2026 Thailand Open on May 17, while Chen Yufei took silver in women's singles and the duo of Zhu Yijun and Li Qian finished runners-up in mixed doubles.
Making their international debut as partners, 23-year-old Bao and 18-year-old Cao faced the world No. 7 Japanese duo of Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi in the title decider.
Falling behind after losing the opening game, the promising Chinese pair staged a stunning comeback to win 19-21, 21-16, 21-19 after a gruelling 72-minute battle.
In the women's singles title contest, defending champion Chen suffered a straight-game defeat to Japan's Akane Yamaguchi, losing 21-14, 21-18 to settle for second place.
China's Zhu and Li were beaten 21-17, 21-15 by Denmark's Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje in the mixed doubles final.
Meanwhile, the men's singles final served up a nail-biting 97-minute clash as Denmark's Anders Antonsen edged home favorite Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand. Indonesia's Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin lifted the men's doubles trophy.
3. Chinese FA imposes life bans to 17 individuals for gambling, match fixing
The Chinese Football Association (CFA) on May 21 announced the third batch of sanctions related to match-fixing, gambling and other misconduct in Chinese football, handing lifetime bans to 17 individuals and imposing an additional six-point deduction on Meizhou Hakka Football Club.
According to the CFA, 17 persons convicted by Chinese courts were suspended for life from any football-related activities, while 48 other practitioners received bans of five years or less for serious violations of industry discipline. The punishments were determined based on factors such as the nature of their misconduct, the amount of money involved, the frequency of violations and the degree of malicious intent.
The CFA also announced that second-tier (China League One) club Meizhou Hakka would be deducted an additional six points in the 2026 season and fined 800,000 yuan (117,600 U.S. dollars).
"Based on newly obtained criminal court judgment materials, Meizhou Hakka Football Club was discovered to have been involved in other serious violations of regulations and discipline," the CFA said in a statement.
The CFA had previously released two batches of disciplinary sanctions in September 2024 and January 2026, with more than 100 individuals receiving lifetime bans and over 10 clubs being fined.
4. Shanghai moves into CBA Finals after 24-year absence
The Shanghai Sharks rallied past the Beijing Ducks 99-85 to clinch a 3-1 victory in the best-of-five Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) semifinals on May 22.
Shanghai, the regular-season champion, reached the final for the first time since 2002 when they defeated the Bayi Rockets 3-1 to secure their first-ever CBA championship.
Beijing had a strong performance during the first half to build a 51-35 lead, but Shanghai staged a 39-11 third-quarter rally, heading into the final period with a 12-point advantage. Shanghai expanded the lead to 16 points midway through the fourth and never looked back.
5. Chinese shuttlers advance to Malaysia Masters semifinals in several categories
Chinese shuttlers stormed past their quarterfinal opponents at the 2026 Malaysia Masters on May 22, securing semifinal berths across multiple events.
Men's singles world junior champion Hu Zhe'an outplayed Indonesia's Jonatan Christie 14-21, 21-13, 21-16, while Li Shifeng defeated France's Toma Junior Popov 21-18, 15-21, 21-5.
Chen Yufei outplayed Thailand's Pitchamon Opatniputh 21-19, 21-9 in the women's singles semifinals.
Women's doubles pair Bao Lijing and Cao Zihan overcame Chen Yan Fei and Sun Liang Ching of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 18-21, 21-15, while Chen Fanshutian and Luo Xumin overpowered Japan's Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi 24-22, 21-18.
Mixed doubles duo Gao Jiaxuan and Wei Yaxin outplayed Malaysia's Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei 21-18, 21-16, while Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui defeated Presley Smith and Jennie Gai of the United States 23-21, 22-20.
