DUBLIN, Ireland: A retired Defense Forces member has been sentenced to six years in prison for raping a teenage girl more than 40 years ago.
The 78-year-old man admitted to raping the 13- or 14-year-old girl in his home in Co. Westmeath in 1981 while she was babysitting. He pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to one count of rape. His identity cannot be revealed to protect the victim's anonymity.
The victim described the impact of the assault as "horrendous," saying it stole her childhood and left her with lifelong trauma, nightmares, anxiety, and severe PTSD. She said the memory of the attack — and the man's smell of alcohol, cigarettes, and aftershave — has haunted her ever since.
Justice Paul McDermott called it a "very serious offense" and said the man "took complete advantage" of a child left in his care. He noted that the man and his wife were trusted neighbors and that the victim had every reason to believe she was safe in their home.
The judge sentenced the man to eight years in prison, suspending the final two years under strict conditions. He said the man showed "little victim awareness" and that it was clear he "knew exactly what he was doing to this child."
