DUBLIN, Ireland: Motorists using Dublin's M50 have paid a staggering 2.1 billion euros in tolls since the introduction of the eFlow system in 2008, according to newly released figures.
Data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that 211 million euros were collected in M50 tolls in 2024 alone, reflecting an increase of nearly 11 percent compared to the previous year.
Figures from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) also indicate that motorists paid 190 million euros in tolls on roads outside Dublin last year. When VAT is included, the total rises to 234 million euros.
Aontu leader Peadar Toibin has criticized the continued tolling of the M50, arguing that drivers have long since covered the cost of the infrastructure.
"We were told, initially, that the purpose of tolls was to pay for the roads that we're using, and it is quite clear that commuters have paid for those two bridges well over 20 times now," Toibin said.
He urged the government to end toll charges on the M50, calling them an unfair burden on drivers with few alternatives.
The M50, Dublin's busiest motorway, plays a critical role in the city's transport network, but ongoing toll costs continue to be a contentious issue for commuters and policymakers alike.
